Since the 1800's, American citizens have recognized Thanksgiving by replicating the concept of the pilgrims and the Indians seated together for a friendly meal. As beautiful as this vision of unity may be, it is not the reality. The story of pilgrims and Indians was one of unwelcome friendship. while the Indians supplied the pilgrims with goods and education to survive their first winter the pilgrims gave thanks to them by antagonizing and striking them. 
Even though this is not what we like to picture as we join together to celebrate with our relatives and buddies, perhaps it offers a new aspect to the season. The pilgrims were unappeasable and immoral. They took from the Indians and repaid them in the most severe ways possible. Perhaps instead of emulating the dreamy story of the pilgrims and Indians as companions each Thanksgiving, we should consider on the unfaithfulness the Indians endured at the hands of their "friends" the pilgrims. Now I don't mean that Thanksgiving should be a formal day of contemplation and remembrance, but maybe we should take the opportunity to consider our own relationships. Of all the things we offer thanks for on Thanksgiving, the men and women we love should be at the very top. Thanksgiving is not only a time for us to discuss our many blessings with those closest to us, but to show our appreciation for their devoted friendship.
